I am commenting on the proposal for an interim combined sewer to support development at 955 Lake Shore Boulevard (Ontario Place). I am VERY MUCH OPPOSED to the proposal which goes against decades of work by the City of Toronto to separate and replace combined sewers across the city to prevent the discharge of raw sewage into Lake Ontario! I'm old enough to remember human feces floating in the lake, and it's not something we want to go back to.
Everything about this contravenes international agreements to protect water quality and habitat in the Great Lakes. Solid waste will make ALL of the beaches in Toronto unuseable in the hot summer months. This discharge risks human health in terms of water quality at beaches, fishing and the quality of the lake as an attraction for Canadian and international visitors.
Noteably, the province has also not held any consultations about this work with the general public. They know full well that it's a huge political error to do this. Public opinion is already against this useless spa, which will be an abandoned urban ruin within ten years, and now building it is going to damage not just the waterfront with an environmental disaster of a landfill, but also the actual water quality.
The Ford Government is in a rush, for reasons as yet undiscovered to push through the development of this project, despite public pushback. This proposal to benefits only private sector initiatives, is very much against the public interest and threatens the stability of the lake ecosystem in a time of severe biodiversity loss. Please deny this permit.
