I, as a board member of the Saint Lawrence Neighborhood Association and as a private citizen, would like to voice my opposition to the erection of billboards along 400 series highways and/or the relaxing of regulations related to the erection of said signs as well as video billboards along municipally owned and operated expressways.
If signage did not capture motorists attention then there would not be a market for them. Counter to billboard proprietors contention, billboards - particularly billboards with moving images or that change rapidly - are a great distraction to motorists and take their attention away from the task at hand: driving in a safe and responsible manner.
As evidenced by the more than 3,000 vulnerable road user casualties - including at least 45 fatalities - on just Toronto streets alone in 2016 - the majority of which were the result of distracted driving - the last thing that is needed on our roads is more distractions.
