This project is to divert an untreated wastewater pipe (that empties now into “open” waters on the south/west side of the Ontario Place’s Island) towards an “enclosed” space of the West Channel, behind the breakwater wall. A wall that runs for over 4 km along the lakeshore and who’s only purpose is to “isolate” and “protect” this space by disconnecting it from Lake Ontario’s debris and high-waves, creating a “calm waters” environment where athletes from rowing, kayaking, dragon-boating, swimming and other individuals practicing various recreational sports, can enjoy their daily training / activities. A place that was (and will be) the host of national, international and world water-sports championships.
So, the Province wants:
1. to "prevent" the pollution of a future beach, built on a private leased space, that will run for a few hundred meters and will be used by a couple of thousands people for probably 3 months/year
2. by polluting (!) an area that runs for over 4 km on public land, a famous landmark in Toronto, with countless amenities and activities, that it's been used by millions of ontarians for 8 mos/year.
It’s disturbing, outrageous and completely unacceptable!
