I’m writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed interim combined sewer system at 955 Lake Shore Boulevard, which is intended to support the controversial Therme MegaSpa development. This plan blatantly disregards decades of progress by the City of Toronto to eliminate combined sewers and prevent raw sewage from entering Lake Ontario—a crucial resource for the city and the broader Great Lakes region.
Let’s not pretend this is harmless. This proposal threatens public health by risking water quality at our beaches and fisheries, and it undermines Lake Ontario as a destination that Canadians and international visitors cherish. Moreover, the government has fast-tracked this project with zero meaningful public consultation. This isn’t just tone-deaf; it’s a direct affront to the environmental protections so many of us have fought to uphold.
It’s clear that this project prioritizes corporate interests over public and ecological well-being. Pushing this through at taxpayer expense, in the face of worsening biodiversity loss and climate instability, is nothing short of reckless. The City already has a comprehensive, multi-year plan to address sewer issues responsibly, but instead of following that, the Ford government and Infrastructure Ontario are bending over backwards to meet private deadlines.
This isn’t progress—it’s profiteering at the expense of our collective future. I urge you to deny this permit and demand better for our environment and communities.
