I grew up by Lake Ontario as a child. I remember there being summers where we weren’t able to go swimming everyday and seeing dead fish and marine life float up to the top of the water due to pollution.
In the last 20 years, the city and the provincial government have done an amazing job cleaning Lake Ontario and preserving it. The quality of the water has significantly improved. Swimmers, rowers, sailers, and lots of people enjoy the natural environment around Lake Ontario close to Ontario Place. It also supports lots of unique habitat and birds.
Creating a sewage pipe that releases waste off of Ontario Place is a regression in policy. We should be moving forward by becoming better stewards of the land and water, not moving backwards and undoing the progress we’ve made.
If I decide to have children, I’d like to be able to take them to the beach and have them partake in water sports. Something I wasn’t able to do as a child in Lake Ontario. This proposed infrastructure is regressive, environmentally damaging, and shouldn’t be permitted if the government cared about environmental stewardship and protecting our waters.
