Having lived in Toronto for 30 years, I have watched efforts to upgrade a struggling and ageing sewer system to avoid discharging raw sewage into the lake. With climate change, heavier rainfall is already taxing the sewer system and leading to flooding events in low lying areas. Exacerbating this problem by willingly installing infrastructure that discharges raw sewage into Lake Ontario is not progress. I strongly oppose this project. Ontario Place is also close to significant recreation areas, like Sunnyside Beach or Cherry Beach, that are visited by thousands every year, and will be significantly impacted by higher E.coli numbers due to sewage discharge. Toronto also uses Lake Ontario for drinking water, and although we have water treatment plants, the risk of drinking water contamination is increased when having to remove human waste. This project is dangerous and does not prioritize the wellbeing of Toronto residents.
