As a 21-year-old politically engaged citizen who has called Ontario home my entire life, I am dumbfounded by the Ford government’s complete disregard for environmental protections. He walked back the Greenbelt land swap only after public backlash. He has yet to cancel the ludicrous Therme contract after the luxury spa company completely misrepresented themselves in the deal. He is more interested in speeding up vanity projects like the Hwy 401 tunnel than making sure due diligence is done.
And now Bill 5, which the Honorable Mike Schreiner has spoke out against, as well as several First Nations and environmental groups, for its proposal to override treaty rights, worker health and safety laws, and environmental impact assessments in the interest of carelessly speeding up controversial projects. Laws that protect people and the environment are NOT red tape. They are there for a reason, and the Ford government should not be allowed to pass this bill given the precedent it will set.
