Archaeological assessments are not red tape. Good archaeology does not have to cause delays and should be viewed as an asset to a project.
Hiring a qualified and experienced archaeologist on projects means that predictive modelling and screening techniques are utilized in order to help avoid and protect critical heritage sites.
Furthermore, Indigenous participation and community support are important factors to successful projects within the province.
I strongly encourage the Province to reconsider the proposal to exempt provincial priority projects from archaeological requirements. A more useful path forward would be creating greater capacity within its own internal regulatory and review processes as they relate to archaeology.
