I am writing to express my strong opposition to Bill 5, the Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act. This legislation poses significant risks to environmental protections, Indigenous rights, and responsible land use planning.
Bill 5 would allow the province to create special economic zones, bypassing critical regulations that safeguard Ontario’s natural resources, endangered species, and Indigenous treaty rights. The bill also weakens environmental assessments, making it easier for large-scale development projects to proceed without proper oversight.
Ontario’s farmland, ecosystems, and Indigenous communities deserve thoughtful, transparent decision-making—not rushed policies that prioritize short-term economic gains over long-term sustainability. I urge you to reconsider this legislation and engage in meaningful consultation with affected communities.
