Many countries and states have banned commercial signage along their highways. Last spring I traveled from Toronto to Nashville, Tennessee and immediately noticed the lack of billboards along many of the highways. (I also noticed the ugly, tall signs at every exit along the Interstates that advertise fast food and gasoline stations. A true eyesore and absolutely unnecessary.)
Living in Toronto I find the electronic billboards that have been erected not only ugly, but terribly distracting. Some of them are so bright that they almost blind you, and the ones that constantly change are extra-distracting. I feel that they are truly a safety hazard.
I also have a cottage in the Haliburton Highlands. I do not object to the blue information road signs that advertise tourist attractions nor to small, temporary signs and sandwich boards (for example, those used to advertise a local arts tour or a farmer's market) along the side of the highway. I DO object to the increased proliferation of full-sized billboards that I have observed popping up along highways such as Hwy. 35, which the government itself advertises as a "scenic drive". Scenic drives should not be polluted by large billboards.
Please do not allow increased billboards along our highways.
