These proposed amendments are too vague in their language, leaving for the potential for misuse by government parties in power and third parties, particularly in regards to the exemption of properties from archaeological assessments, and for authorities to establish criteria for land exemptions. These amendments are also so vague that it creates potential to lock out Indigenous people's input on significant sites and their excavations and analyses, particularly in areas that they are historically tied to and have stewardship over. More work needs to be done to refine the language of these amendments to create clear boundaries and uses of these almost extreme overriding powers, and this refining needs to be done in full and extensive collaboration with the Indigenous communities of Ontario, as this will affect them the most.
