The Township of Cavan Monaghan supports the concept of a natural heritage system but has some concerns with the system mapping proposed.  The proposed mapping does not accurately reflect local natural heritage system mapping.  What local data was used to create the mapping?

There are a number of areas where the proposed mapping appears to be incorrect (Millbrook Settlement Area) and areas where the proposed natural heritage system seems to include more land than identified by local environmental information (i.e. Mount Pleasant,).  These areas are provided as examples only.  Why are known natural heritage features (i.e. the Jackson Creek Lowland Provincially Significant Wetland, the Jackson Creek Drumlin Area of Natural and Scientific Interest and portions of the Peterborough Airport Wetland Complex Provincially Significant Wetland) not included in the provincial Natural Heritage System.?

More detailed mapping for the Natural Heritage System needs to be made available to local municipalities for review.  Detailed mapping needs to be made available on an ongoing basis.

The time frame between the Ministry training session on September 12 and the deadline for comments (Oct. 4) is too short to allow a thorough review, discussion and comment on the proposal.  There was no time to discuss the proposal with other agencies that have a vested interest and work with the Township on an on-going basis (i.e. ORCA).  The Township respectfully requests an extension to the deadline for comments.

The Township requests provincial funding to help the Township address minor amendments to the heritage system mapping that may be required at the time of implementation (i.e. official plan preparation).
