These amendments put the public at risk as they prioritize protection of the economy over commitments to prevent harm to public health and the environment. With serious potential impacts of mining, it is critical that thorough and comprehensive reviews of mine permit applications are conducted, and never expedited. Expediting approval of mining permits prevents thorough and comprehensive reviews, reflecting a disregard for the potential consequences of land degradation, biodiversity loss, and pollution – all of which directly impact the health and well-being of the affected communities.
Additionally, this bill will weaken the Mining act, modifying its purposes and curtailing crucial consultation of and from the public, ultimately eroding mining safeguards currently in place.
Public and Indigenous consultation are also necessary steps to ensure that projects embed the knowledge of local voices and act in the best interests of communities.
