To the MOE:

Re the MOE’s recent proposal that Marando Court test and, if need be, remediate the soil on which it sits: We, the residents of the 4-building complex, have been informed that the soil under Marando Court may be contaminated with tetrachloroethylene – a chemical originally emanating from Parker’s Cleaners (formerly located north of Marando Court).

Of concern, is that the residents of Marando Court neither contaminated the soil nor have the means to pay for soil testing/remediation. Marando Court, which is over 70 years old, is a cooperative which houses mostly low-income people, most of whom are seniors and/or those with serious health issues/disabilities. If required to cover costs of inspection and clean-up, 90% of the residents would likely become destitute. In light of the facts, we kindly request that the MOE coordinate with the City of Burlington to access provincial grants/federal funding to cover the costs of compliance.

With appreciation for the opportunity to provide feedback,
