The proposed amendments would delay recycling targets by five years (from 2026 to 2031) and allow up to 15% of targets to be met through incineration, which does not qualify as recycling under Canadian standards.

These proposed amendments would weaken accountability for recycling, blur the definition of “recycling,” and risk undermining local efforts to reduce landfill waste, just as municipalities like Ottawa (as they should!!!) are ramping up waste diversion initiatives.

Producers have been polluting Ontario long enough. They must be held to account NOW (not later!!!) with strong, enforceable standards that reflect the urgency of our environmental challenges. As Canada’s most populous province, Ontario should lead the country in genuine recycling regulations, NOT water it down.

Ontarians care deeply about credible climate and waste action. This is a pivotal moment to protect the integrity of our recycling system.
