This proposal is evidence of our government's weakness under pressure from industry.
The circular economy act is just beginning to take root - its purpose is to shift the burden of responsibility onto waste producers, and away from municipalities. This proposal threatens a 5-year delay in recycling targets. It threatens to allow up to 15% of a company's recycling targets to be met through incineration, ignoring the current CSA guidance (published 2024) which explicitly excludes incineration from the definition of recycling.
The government is elected by ontarians, and its job is it act in ontarians' best interest - not to bow to pressure from their rich friends in business. Ontarians care about the environment, and we want to see action from our government, not cronyism. The robust recycling plan that Ontario needs must not be allowed to be eroded by this cowardly proposal.
