I am very excited about Ontario's Climate Change Action Plan and specifically the EV and charging incentives that exist and are being implemented in the future. One of the greatest barriers for me is the lack of availability of practical, reasonably priced EVs in the marketplace. In Windsor, ON, the only eligible vehicle I've been able to test drive has been the Chevy Volt. Other models are coming but not for another year or two. How can the Province ensure that the incentives will still exist once more eligible products are readily available in the marketplace? I currently have a reservation for a Tesla Model 3 - might it possible to allow me as a homeowner to receive the incentive to install a Level 2 charger BEFORE the car is available? With regard to the $75000 limit on luxury cars, providing incentives for wealthy people may have the opposite to intended effect and cause rejection of the technology. I would prefer to see the expansion of charger networks.
The Province should work with the Federal government to eliminate the GST on electric vehicles. I know that this is part of the plan, but what progress has been made?
Finally, with the automotive manufacturing expertise that exists in my region of Ontario (Windsor/Essex), why is the Province not working with the Federal government to encourage companies like Tesla (who is undergoing massive expansion) to setup manufacturing here? We have great access to solar energy, are located within 8 hours of 1/2 of North America's population, have the second best EV incentives in North America and have tonnes of abandoned industrial space. I know that this may not be directly related to this specific policy but I can't think of a better way to promote EVs while adding value to our economy.
