I am writing to express my serious concerns regarding the proposed Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA) for GFL Stoney Creek (ERO #025-1000).
I have been experiencing persistent and severe odours emanating from this facility for over 3 years, and I have submitted 12 formal complaints to date (reference numbers available upon request, 6 of them have been raised in 2025 between April and September 2025). The odours are overwhelmingly strong, often described as a combination of rotten eggs, leachate, and chemical/toxic smells. They are so intense that they cause nausea, throat and neck irritation, and difficulty breathing.
The most recent incidents occurred on September 2025 around 09:20 and Reference number is 250902-000011, including morning periods when residents, including children waiting for the school bus, are exposed, Evening when the elderly are out for walk and afternoon when we cannot even enjoy basic Fresh air . These odors make it extremely difficult to engage in basic outdoor activities and negatively affect our quality of life and health.
While the proposed ECA mentions air emissions, I am concerned that it does not adequately address:
Odour control measures that are sufficient to prevent ongoing exposure to residents.
Transparency and reporting : the responses have consistently been template statements, such as: “GFL staff arrived at your residence. Staff conducted their investigation of the area, and no odour was detected at that time on Sherway or Rexdale. However, a strong material relocation odour was detected on Green Mountain Road.” These responses are frustrating and dismissive, as no staff have ever actually knocked on my door or spoken with me directly. I fail to understand why, if so much effort is supposedly made to investigate, residents are not engaged in person. This lack of meaningful communication prevents the community from understanding the measures being taken and undermines confidence in the complaint process.
Community engagement, so that residents can be informed and consulted about operational impacts in real-time.
I strongly urge the Ministry to require strict emission controls, continuous monitoring, and transparent reporting. The health and well-being of the Stoney Creek community must be prioritized alongside any operational or economic considerations.
Thank you for considering my comments. I request that a record of this submission be kept on file, and I am willing to provide additional details, including past complaint reference numbers, to support the Ministry’s assessment.
