The proposal to dump treated sewage water directly into the Goulais river raises serious environmental and public health concerns. While treatment processes can remove many contaminants, even treated wastewater still contains nutrients, pharmaceuticals, and trace pollutants that harm aquatic ecosystems and wildlife. Releasing it into a natural waterway disrupts the river’s balance, contribute to algae blooms, and degrade water quality downstream. Instead, alternatives such as using treated water for irrigation, industrial processes, or groundwater recharge should be explored. Protecting freshwater systems must remain a priority, as once a river’s ecosystem is damaged, it can take decades to recover. This is a nightmare, and It is mind blowing that this even reached the proposal stage.
