I strongly oppose the dumping of treated sewage into the Goulais River. As a resident within the Goulais watershed, I rely on this water system for safe, clean water and for recreational activities such as swimming, fishing, and canoeing.
Even treated sewage contains nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus, as well as trace pharmaceuticals and microplastics, which can accumulate in aquatic ecosystems. These pollutants can promote algal blooms, reduce oxygen levels, and harm fish populations and other wildlife. Over time, such contamination can alter the river’s ecological balance and reduce water quality for surrounding communities.
Protecting the Goulais River is essential not only for maintaining public health but also for preserving biodiversity and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the watershed. I urge decision-makers to seek alternative wastewater management solutions that do not endanger this vital ecosystem.
