As a resident of Mulmur, near the proposed Strada quarry location, I am very concerned with this proposal. I am a farmer and local food producer. We rely heavily on the natural groundwater resources to grow our crops. A proposal to draw 5 million litres per day is not a sustainable plan for this region. The location is near the headwaters of several watersheds and as such, the impact will be wider spread than other potential locations for a quarry.
As a Category 3 proposal, it is understood that the activity will have the highest potential of causing unacceptable environmental impact and interference. How is this being addressed to the people who live and work in the surrounding area? Many are farmers, just like us, who rely on consistent water resources. If the 5 million litres are being used to wash aggregate, then where will the waste water be going?
I oppose the Strada application to draw 5 million litres of water per day. The extraction of limestone and gravel is not worth the irreversible negative impacts to the region: environmental, economic and health impacts. Please deny the applicant on behalf of the residents and farm businesses living in the area.
