I am thrilled to see that the government is taking action to increase cycling infrastructure across the province. I was glad to see that smaller towns are also part of the plan. In Muskoka, we have a lot of undeveloped potential for integrating cycling into the every day life of local residents and into the tourism opportunities.
At this point, there are almost no paved shoulders and no bicycle trails that link resorts and outlying residential clusters to the town and, unfortunately, cars need to be used more often than they should be. The municipal and district roads are very unsafe for cyclists, especially given the rolling contour, which reduces the visibility for cars drivers. Funding paved shoulders of some key District roads would help greatly. Funding links between outlying residential developments and resorts towards the towns should be a priority.
An education component is also needed, to educate drivers and riders on how to share the road safely.
Thank you very much for supporting these initiatives.
