Our family is a one car, one cargo bike family. The cargo bike is used daily to bring the kids to school (including our son who has cerebral palsy) and to transport my husband to work. As a midwife, I need a vehicle in order to get to births quickly, and as such road efficiency and infrastructure is very important to me. When someone is having a baby quickly and I need to make it to their house in order to assist with a safe delivery (regardless of whether they were planning to have that baby at home or not) you know what doesn't impact my travel time? Bike lanes. Not once has that impacted my ability to get where I need to be (the government workers being mandated to go back into office, now that has congested the roads and affected my travel time for sure).
But in my day to day I don't worry about getting where I need to get to in a car, I worry about my family being hit on their bike by a car due to the frequency of collisions between cars and bikes on roads (and lack of protected bike lanes). "Did they make it home? I'll text just to make sure. Another cyclist was just hit last week at that intersection." The thoughts are always present.
This bill will only make it worse.
This plan takes away cities’ ability to make their own decisions — even when projects are backed by evidence and supported by local residents.
It won’t fix traffic; it’ll make it worse. The government’s own experts have said over and over that bike lanes don’t cause gridlock.
It’ll also make our roads less safe. Protected bike lanes save lives — for people biking, walking, and even driving.
It puts at risk all the things that make our streets work for everyone: reliable transit, safe crossings, patios, curbside access, and school streets.
And it moves us backwards on climate and public health by doubling down on car-dependent streets instead of building better, healthier options for how we get around.
