I'm a driver who commutes daily, and I oppose this proposal because it will make my commute worse.
When there are no bike lanes, cyclists ride in the car lanes and slow down traffic. I get stuck behind bikes going 20 km/h in a 50 km/h zone, unable to pass safely. It's frustrating and adds time to my commute.
Protected bike lanes get cyclists OFF the roads I'm driving on. When they have their own lanes, I can drive at normal speed without worrying about hitting someone on a bike. This is better for everyone.
Blocking municipalities from building bike lanes means MORE cyclists in car lanes, making traffic slower and more dangerous. This is the opposite of reducing gridlock.
