As a commercial truck driver, I'm opposing this proposal for safety reasons.
Cyclists in my blind spots are one of my biggest fears. When there are no protected bike lanes, cyclists ride beside or behind my truck where I can't see them. This is terrifying because I never want to hurt anyone.
Protected bike lanes keep cyclists separated from large vehicles like mine. When cyclists have their own space away from truck routes, both they and I are much safer. I can focus on driving without the constant anxiety of checking for bikes in my blind spots.
Preventing municipalities from building protected bike infrastructure will put more cyclists next to commercial vehicles, increasing the risk of serious accidents. This is bad policy that makes roads less safe for everyone.
