This proposal is taking us in the wrong direction, particularly for our cities. We need to build our cities to be less car dependent. The environment demands it of us.
This proposal strips cities of local authority and decision-making, even when projects are supported by evidence and local residents.
The government's own experts have consistently said that bike lanes are not a cause of gridlock - this bill will worsen traffic congestion.
Additionally, the wording of this proposal is too broad. It threatens not just bike lanes but other use of road space that communities rely on, such as transit priority, safe crossings, patios, curb-side access and school streets.
