I am strongly opposed to Bill 60. This legislation strips cities of the basic ability to shape their own streets and transportation systems, even when decisions are rooted in evidence and supported by local residents. Municipalities understand the needs of their communities far better than the provincial government, and they should retain the authority to design streets that serve everyone safely.

Bill 60 will also make traffic worse, not better. The government’s own experts have repeatedly shown that bike lanes are not the cause of congestion. In fact, protected bike lanes are proven to reduce injuries and fatalities for people biking, walking, and driving. Removing or preventing this infrastructure will only increase danger on our roads.

This bill also threatens essential uses of road space that communities rely on, including dedicated bus lanes, safe pedestrian crossings, school streets, patios, loading zones, and other improvements that support vibrant, accessible neighbourhoods. By forcing cities into car-dependent street designs, Bill 60 contradicts provincial climate goals and harms public health at a time when we should be encouraging active and sustainable transportation.

Bill 60 is an unnecessary overreach that puts lives at risk and undermines the ability of cities to plan responsibly for the future. I urge you not to pass this legislation.
