Bike lanes are cheaper than public transportation and yet allow individuals who cannot afford cars (or would prefer not to drive for whatever reason) to choose a cheaper alternative to get around. If cycling can become a safe way of transportation, studies show that local businesses also benefit. Cycling lanes also reduce congestion since they move people away from driving so it is reasonable to allow cycling lanes to take away space from car lanes. Cycling is an equalizer across socio-demographic groups, is environmentally friendly, is cheaper for the taxpayer than increasing car lanes.
