I am writing to express my strong opposition to Section 195.3 of Bill 60, which prohibits municipalities from reducing lanes for motor vehicles to create bicycle lanes or other alternative transit infrastructure.
As a resident of Bloor West Village, I have witnessed firsthand how thoughtful, mixed-use transportation planning enhances both the livability and economic vitality of our neighbourhood. Our community’s vibrant local shopping culture and walkable environment are the direct result of municipal decisions that balance the needs of drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike. Limiting a city’s ability to continue this kind of planning is, in my view, a serious mistake.
This section of the bill represents provincial overreach into matters that should remain under local jurisdiction. Residents elect municipal officials precisely because they are best positioned to understand the unique transportation needs, economic conditions, and safety concerns of their communities. Removing that authority undermines local democracy and risks imposing a one-size-fits-all approach that does not serve citizens well.
Reducing barriers to alternative and active modes of transport, such as cycling and walking, is essential for reducing congestion, improving public health, and meeting climate goals. Section 195.3 runs counter to these objectives by prioritizing motor vehicle traffic over the broader interests of communities and the environment.
I urge you to remove or revise Section 195.3 of Bill 60 to restore municipal autonomy and to allow cities to continue designing safer, more sustainable streets that reflect the will and well-being of their residents.
Thank you for considering my concerns. I hope the government will take this opportunity to reaffirm its trust in municipalities and the citizens who elect them.
