Bill 60 is an omnibus bill that gets an encouraging title to conceal its true content. Specifically as it relates to usurping the power of municipalities to regulate its roads, it is a blatant power grab by the province. Banning bike lanes or for any other purposes the Minister of Transportation so prescribes is not based on fact and gives the Minister unchecked power. Countless world-class cities are expanding their alternative transport modes to ease congestion whereas Ontario is bent on encouraging car-driving. The internal research of the Ministry of Transportation has produced scant evidence to support the removal or banning of bike lanes in Toronto. On a more philosophical note, this is also a direct assault on local democracy as the Premier amasses more power with himself and the cabinet. I urge the Government to stay in its lane and let elected local leaders deal with their local affairs.
