In numerous transportation policy and growth plans the Province claims to support sustainable modes of transportation while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This bill directly contravenes these objectives. In central Toronto, most cyclists - commuters, students, and delivery couriers - bike because it is fast, reliable, fun, and most of all, safe thanks to cycling infrastructure that was almost entirely built under former Mayors Ford and Tory.
Throughout Toronto, and much of the Province, there are numerous areas where multiple lanes are excessive to the demand, and so could be converted to a cycling lane with minimal traffic impacts. University Avenue is one such example, as at its most narrow section (south of King), it had and still has 2-lanes per direction, which the bike lanes did not change, and the City has shared the traffic data to prove the negligible impact on traffic. The Province could have required cities demonstrate minimal adverse impacts on traffic. Instead, this bill, entirely based on flawed ideology rather than any facts, effectively bans cycling infrastructure, directly contravening the Province's transportation and sustainability long-term goals.
