Opposition to Bill 60

I am writing to express my strong opposition to Bill 60, which would significantly undermine local democracy and public safety across Ontario. This bill strips cities of the authority to make decisions about their own streets, even when those decisions are supported by evidence, expert analysis, and the voices of local residents.
Municipal governments understand the unique needs of their communities. By removing their ability to plan and implement projects such as bike lanes, safer crossings, and transit improvements, Bill 60 disregards local expertise and the will of the people.
Contrary to the bill’s stated goals, it will worsen traffic congestion, not reduce it. The government’s own experts have consistently said that bike lanes are not a cause of gridlock. In fact, by encouraging more people to bike or walk for short trips, cities can reduce the number of cars on the road and improve traffic flow for everyone.
Bill 60 will also make roads more dangerous. Protected bike lanes prevent serious injuries and deaths for people biking, walking, and driving. Removing or restricting these safety measures will put lives at risk and reverse years of progress toward safer streets.
In addition, the bill threatens other vital uses of road space that communities rely on, including transit priority lanes, safe pedestrian crossings, patios that support small businesses, curbside access, and school streets that keep children safe. These are the very elements that make our cities more livable and vibrant.
Finally, Bill 60 undermines Ontario’s climate goals and public health by locking cities into car-dependent street designs. Encouraging walking, cycling, and public transit helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, and promote healthier, more active lifestyles. This bill moves us in the opposite direction.
The installation of protective bike lanes in my community has made a huge difference for families, commuters and couriers who use bikes as part of their jobs. I feel safer biking in a bike lane and local businesses have seen more foot traffic as a result. This bill, if passed would take away these kinds of improvements that make our neighbourhoods better and safer. I firmly oppose any legislation that puts me and my community members at risk of injury or death.
