As a Toronto resident, home-owner, and car-owner, I believe that Bill 60 will result in a negative impact to traffic congestion, public safety, and economic development in my area. Municipalities should be empowered to make decisions on local issues because they are better positioned to understand and address their needs of their constituents than the provincial government.
The bike lane restrictions proposed in the bill restrict municipalities from acting to address those needs. Furthermore, the province has not provided any independently-conducted research or data that suggests that bike lane restrictions will improve traffic congestion nor be conducive to the economic development of Ontario. Instead, it forces more residents to use a car by making other forms of transportation less viable and the result is more cars and therefore more traffic, more pollution, and degraded quality of life.
