South River, Ontario is a prime example of critical water planning delays in populated and tourist areas. It is only a few hours away from Toronto and a hub for day trippers from the city, just north of Muskoka's cottage country. Currently, it is part of a Level 2 advisory for the first time in history including all of North Bay - Mattawa areas for unprecedented low water levels.
Why is it unprecedented, when 2021 saw the first Level 1 advisory issued? Why are some places still posting signs to not drink the tap water, including the outdoor public spring in the neighboring town of Sundridge?
Residents are going without water on a daily basis since the advisory started. South River is known to all neighboring towns as having "bad water", when it is the source for so many through the Forest Lake historic dam. Why is this? Tourists are bringing in their own water. Landlords are questioning the need for filtration systems and now also reservoirs or holding tanks to address the low water supply. They believe it is temporary and will pass. Residents believe otherwise.
Research shows that South River has had difficulties obtaining water samples on time and officials still don't know the exact location of the supply intake pipe located in a shallow pond, while likely ignoring the major upgrades needed in order to reduce contaminated water and increase supply for Residents.
Considering how many government officials likely vacation in this area, it is astounding to me that Residents live like this. I have been living here for 3 years and already considering moving elsewhere due to long-standing issues like this and politics preventing progress.
