I support the Province’s initiative to enforce one set of building standards across Ontario.
Having the same rules everywhere makes it easier for builders, tradespeople, and consultants to do their work without confusion or delays. It also helps keep construction jobs steady because we can build anywhere in the province with the same set of rules and standards.
The standards set out should be based on research combined with practical application. The National Research Council of Canada (NRC), through its Climate Resilient Built Environment (CRBE) Initiative, shows that heavy rain and unpredictable storms are going to get worse in the years ahead. If we don’t prepare now, flooding will damage homes, roads, and workplaces—and that means lost jobs and costly repairs.
To protect communities and keep construction work strong, the Province should:
- Update the stormwater management manual to match the National Research Council of Canada (NRC)’s latest scientific findings.
- Set province-wide lot-level water balance rules, including green roofs, with clear performance standards.
- Add Toronto’s Green Roof Construction Standard to the Ontario Building Code so installations are consistent everywhere.
- Offer incentive programs and/or funding for lot-level stormwater projects, which will save money by reducing the need for expensive underground sewer system upgrades or replacements.
If Ontario builds with resilience and sustainability in mind, we’ll not only protect our communities from flooding—we’ll also protect construction jobs and keep the industry moving forward.
