I am strongly opposed to this proposed legislation. Cities and municipalities need more cycling infrastructure, not less. The very notion that creating more capacity on roads for vehicles and drivers will address traffic and congestion, and therefore reduce air pollution is absurd. Motor vehicles ARE congestion and vehicle emissions contribute to air pollution and climate change. It is literal smoke and mirrors to propose that enabling more people to drive and reducing and limiting infrastructure for bicycles - which are a clean, non-greenhouse gas emitting mode of transportation - will address air pollution.
This bill is another example of provincial overreach into matters of municipal jurisdiction....just like the bill that banned photo radar for speeding. It is another act that demonstrates this government's denial of evidence, of its support for car culture and its lack of recognition of the need for equitable, multi-modal transportation systems that ensure the safety of vulnerable road users. People who walk, people who cycle, children, youth, older adults, people with disabilities, people who can't afford or choose not to drive...they all deserve safe infrastructure to get where they need to go. Safer roads for vulnerable users are safer roads for everyone. The people of Ontario deserve better than this punitive kind of legislation.
