I am writing to express my strong opposition to Bill 60, the Fighting Delays, Building Faster Act. The bill significantly limits the ability of municipalities to reallocate road space—even in small, targeted ways—to improve safety, transit efficiency, and community well-being.
Restricting municipalities from reducing motor vehicle lanes to create cycling infrastructure, bus priority lanes, school-area safety improvements, or other evidence-based street designs removes essential tools that local governments rely on. Municipalities understand their transportation needs far better than a one-size-fits-all provincial mandate. This bill would prevent projects already in planning, such as Parkside Drive, Dupont Street, and the Danforth Avenue extension, from moving ahead—even though these projects are supported by data on safety and public demand.
Modern transportation planning relies on flexibility: reallocating space when necessary to reduce collisions, support children and seniors, improve transit reliability, and provide practical alternatives to driving. The broad language in Bill 60 would stop municipalities from making these adjustments even when evidence clearly shows they save lives and reduce congestion.
I urge the province to reconsider these amendments and maintain municipal authority to apply evidence-based, context-specific street design. Ontario needs safer, more efficient, and more accessible transportation options—not restrictions that prevent proven improvements.
