Many people I meet in Toronto are shocked when I mention that I bicycle a lot. A good number say they stopped after a car hit them or one of their close friends.
I live downtown and am happy to say that I feel safe when I ride. But I plan my routes around enclosed bike lanes and those are what ensure I am safe while riding.
Another moment I remember is having to go to a hospital for a broken finger (from sledding) and a shaking cyclist across from me relaying how he was hit by a car on an exposed bike lane. The drive did not stop and ran away leaving him and strangers to help him get to a hospital.
I also see a lot of families riding! Babies behind parents, teens and kids riding along. Exposing them to traffic means endangering them!
