Limiting municipalities from using green development standards is a step in the wrong direction. Things like native trees, bioswales, permeable paving, and bike parking aren’t “extras” — they directly reduce flooding, heat risks, and long-term infrastructure costs. If the province blocks cities from setting these requirements, taxpayers will end up paying more later while developers save a bit now. Different communities have different environmental needs, and one low provincial standard can’t protect everyone. Instead of restricting cities, we should be raising the baseline so new housing is actually built to last.
