As a long-time resident of Toronto, I am opposed to many elements of Bill 60. specifically how it will make roads more dangerous and will worsen traffic congestion.

The Bill bans any reduction of motor vehicle lanes, with wording so broad that it will not just impact bike lanes as it targets, but also affect bus priority lanes, patios, school streets, and other street improvements that rely on reallocating space.

The government’s own experts have consistently said that bike lanes are not a cause of gridlock. Blocking new protected bike lanes will risk accidents serious injuries and deaths for people biking, walking, and driving.

It also strips cities of local authority and decision-making in areas where they have the most knowledge, even when projects are supported by evidence and local residents.

Ontarians want evidence-based transportation planning and local democracy. Bill 60 should be scrapped and the provincial government return to consulting with local municipalities on their needs instead of trying to dictate to them.

Thank you
