I’m writing because I support one clear set of building standards across Ontario. When the rules are consistent everywhere, builders like me can work efficiently, avoid confusion, and keep Ontario’s construction jobs strong.

But storms are getting worse and the risks to our communities are growing. The National Research Council of Canada and the Climate Resilient Built Environment (CRBE) Initiative warn that heavier rainfall, extreme weather, and unpredictable climate conditions are coming faster than expected. Without stronger standards, flooding and wind damage will impact homes, roads, workplaces, and public spaces. This puts the health and safety of our communities at risk along with the jobs that depend on stable infrastructure.

We need updated stormwater requirements, province wide water balance standards, and proven nature based solutions like green roofs. Incorporating Toronto’s Green Roof Standard into the Ontario Building Code, supported with funding to ensure real implementation, would help reduce flooding, lower heat risks, and improve air quality. These measures protect people, not just buildings.

Ontario can build faster, smarter, and stronger if we put resilience, health, and safety first. Let’s safeguard our communities today and protect the jobs and infrastructure we all rely on.
