I just attended a symposium in Peterborough last Friday with presentations by forest researchers from various universities and feel there is so much good data and research to support protection of even the smallest Old growth forests. There is talk of hemlocks over 400 years old!!The old growth Catchacoma forest is unique to Canada. There is extensive research to support the value of this significant old growth eastern hemlock forest, including its capacity for sequestering carbon, as a home to at-risk species and the presence of rare ecosystems on site. This importance of this forest is recognized and has the support of the local indigenous community of Curve Lake Chief and Council. Together we believe that this special forest should be included on the Environmental Registry of Ontario's list of Protected Places.
