My local conservation authority, the Hamilton Conservation Authority (HCA), manages a large watershed, protects natural areas, and plays a vital role in local flood prevention, local development review, and local environmental health for Hamilton. The proposed provincial merger of conservation authorities raises concerns about losing local decision-making, funding control, and strong community partnerships. HCA argues the merger lacks evidence of need, would be costly without a funding plan, and could weaken efficient services and local relationships. Instead, HCA recommends improving standards, investing in shared technology, providing stable provincial funding, and consulting stakeholders before major changes. Government is for the people; please don't make decisions or design procedures and workflows that makes it harder to have a local voice. We also like green spaces, they are important for our quality of life. The Ontario gov't doesn't measure quality of life, so it's conveniently oblivious where this quality of life is damaged. This is especially painful for one-off benefits, as these green spaces are never restored, created and grown. We only have what we have now. Let's do better at protecting them, not bulldozing them. Remember: government is for the people.
