This is regarding ERO #025-1257:
I strongly do NOT support a merger of conservation lands across Ontario.
I am a Hamilton Resident and I frequently use the Hamilton Conservation Authority (HCA) lands for recreation, as well as to support conservation efforts. I strongly oppose the merger because local conservation authorities play a critical role in reviewing development applications, issuing permits, and helping protect people, property, and infrastructure from flooding, erosion, and other natural hazards, in their areas. All these actions contribute to a safe and healthy environment for local residents today and for generations to come. That’s why decisions about how our lands are used and cared for need to remain grounded in local priorities. If the province moves ahead, local funding and decision-making would shift to a much larger regional agency. Our concern is clear: as systems grow, it becomes harder to protect local priorities and ensure local voices remain central to future decisions.
In addition, the province has not provided adequate reasoning as to why this merger is beneficial. There is significant administrative costs in creating these larger regional conservation holdings, without any clear benefit.
It is been evident with this government that environmental stewardship is a low priority, and I strongly think this merger will continue to undermine important and necessary initiatives and programs that are essential in maintaining and creating healthy environments for us all.
I DO NOT support the merger of Ontario local conservation authorities into large regional authorities as part of the new Ontario Provincial Conservation Agency.
