I am writing to express my strong concerns regarding the proposed changes outlined in ERO Posting 025-1257. While I support efforts to streamline and improve conservation, it is critical that any changes do not compromise the essential work currently being done at the local level.
- Local Conservation Expertise: I urge you to maintain and prioritize the importance of maintaining local conservation expertise and staff. This local knowledge is invaluable for effective, on-the-ground management of specific regional challenges.
- Need for Local Offices: To ensure this expertise is accessible and accountable to the communities they serve, I believe there is a fundamental NEED for local offices and the current staff they employ.
- Watershed-Specific Knowledge: I have significant concerns about losing watershed-specific knowledge and the value of local accountability and representation. Conservation efforts must be tailored to the unique characteristics of each watershed; a centralized approach risks overlooking critical local nuances, leading to less effective and potentially damaging outcomes.
Thank you for considering the vital role of local conservation authorities and the knowledge they hold in protecting Ontario’s natural resources.
