This proposed merger is long overdue; conservation authorities share a single, aligned goal: protecting the environment, watersheds, and biodiversity, among other items. Having duplicate, triplicate, and in some cases quadruple positions, along with the related expenses that come with them, for similar mandates would never occur in a private for-profit entity.
Efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and the delivery of a consolidated message begin with the amalgamation of smaller entities. The people on the various boards who oppose this merger are trying desperately to protect their paychecks, perks and status. The cost efficiencies can be used to lower or maintain client user fees, invest in better equipment and technology, or save taxpayer money.
I would like to see conservation authorities operated by private enterprise with a two-tiered board of directors (similar to the European corporate governance model), comprising primarily private individuals, non-governmental scientists, biologists, and a few government officials.
Unbridled waste, incompetent management, and sheer disrespect for taxpayer funds need to stop; amalgamation is the first step toward accountability for those who oversee conservation authorities.
