Conservation Authorities should be left alone to do their work. The government should not intervene. Each area is unique and has unique and individual problems to address. They provide "boots on the ground" work and are the most familiar with their jurisdiction. I have been a volunteer with one Conservation area for over 30 years. I have witnessed first hand their dedication and hard work. We also offer educational outreach and go into local schools. This would not be provided if government run. We teach children about their local habitat, about ground and source water protection, about trees, turtles, their local watershed, invasive species and offer fish camps and young hunter training. I cannot see these endeavours continuing with the proposed changes.
The local Conservation Authority plants trees, gives forest and woodlot consultations, flood warnings, helps with drought situations and even forest and bog fires which happened in our region just last summer due to dry conditions. They help control invasive species, maintain dams and weirs, maintain 15 local conservation areas and parks ensuring they are accessible for all users. They host local events and give training to volunteers and forestry stewards. They work with First Nations of the area. They also manage a maple syrup production and offer tours to schools. Let them continue this valuable and important work.
