The event that triggered the creation of Conservation Authorities took place the year that I was born. Events including floods, severe storms, and other disasters are happening more frequently. Land that provides habitat for many species including species at risk is at the same time under threat.
I have seen first hand that the local knowledge provided by conservation authority staff reflects knowledge gained on the land that they have built a knowledge base around.
Conservation lands also provide vital space for people to explore and learn in. And buffers that balance the way that land is used.
If there are organizations that have the potential to align with indigenous understanding of land, water , plants and animals…you would think first of conservation authorities.
Anyone who has been part of actions that amalgamate or centralize knows that money is never saved and service declines, never to return to the level optimum level.
Working with those conservation authorities that need support and learning from those that have done excellent work across watersheds is the way forward.
