The process of building a TOC near the Oakville GO station has been deeply flawed:
Lack of transparency in process at the town level: there has been no transparency, with town staff being forced to swear to secrecy re proceedings. THus the community was totally blind as to what was occurring and how. This is OUR provincial government working AGAINST us. Shocking!
Lack of transparency at the provincial end: the province has awarded a permit for development to one of its buddies without due process in terms of bidding and selection - again an opaque process (or no process), favouring a government donor. Shocking!
The design is flawed:
Size of condos and condo market: the condo market has collapsed, especially for small ones which are being proposed for this project. Why then does the government continue to push for the development?
Super-density: the proposed density is far too large for the site, for the town of Oakville, and for the amenities that are or will be close by.
Who will want to live here: there is no thought to WHO would want to live in this small, undesirable patch of land where one can view GO trains on one side and the QEW on the other - with the associated noise and pollution of both. What family would want to live here? Young people who are willing to live temporarily in small condos do not want to live in a lifeless patch of land across from the Oakville GO station. Where is the evidence otherwise.
Insufficient amenities proposed: The site will be largely bereft of any amenities - apart from proximity of GO trains and the QEW. Such development must not be allowed.
Lack of road infrastructure: Roads in the vicinity of the Oakville GO station are already crowded and options for expansion are limited. All roads leading to downtown Oakville - a very popular destination - are old and narrow and residential. Some, like the major thoroughfare Trafalgar Road south of Cornwall, is already narrow and includes a school entrance which already causes major congestion twice a day. When a garbage truck is at work, there are line ups of traffic. It has no land for widening.
In summary
The town of Oakville took much time to prepare a good plan for the site in question, meeting provincially-set growth targets. Why does the province chose to ignore it?
I am frankly sick of a provincial government that doesn't work for me and my fellow 'ordinary' citizens but only for wealthy party donors.
