I'm asking the MECP to please remember and consider that this ECA application and proposal is not being pursued to address / update a municipality that needs urgent / improved waste water management.
This is an application and WWTP that is being pursued by a non-Canadian, privately owned (American) ski resort that wants to expand significantly for profit.
Short cuts and exceptions around water quality data, ongoing monitoring and PQWOs should not be granted, overlooked under any circumstance.
While the proponents promise to stimulate the local economy and increase tourism, once they achieve their expansion plan(s) they will be providing full accommodations and food service. With allows them to attract, contain and profit from the tourism increase. The local economy will not be as stimulated as promised. Perhaps pass through traffic will touch the local economy but the majority will funnel through and remain with the business itself.
Most importantly, what good is a single tourism destination when the local environment and it's residences are at risk and/or facing impacts as a result of this new WWTP? Not to mention the small Canadian-owned businesses that will suffer who live and rely on the river. Or the tourism that is produced from anglers and recreational purposes alone who use the Goulais River, Goulais Bay, Batchewana Bay and the Lake Superior Provincial Park for.
With this all in mind, please hold the proponent to the highest extent of environmental scrutiny so that Canadian land, water and citizens do not suffer the consequences.
MECP, the community is relying on you to protect Ontario’s land, water, species at risk and their habitats by protecting the Goulais River.
